THE INITIATOR
Jehoshua Rozenman
Galerie Fontana endeavours to critically engage with the contemporary art landscape, most fittingly with a solo presentation of the works by Jehoshua Rozenman. The Initiator, opening on the 30th of May 2024, is a presentation of the artist’s sculptures, operating under the illusionary pretence of Bauhaus-inspired technical and architectural designs. However, these three-dimensional forms could not be further from a maquette since abstraction plays a vital role, a new development is Rozenman’s use of AI (artificial intelligence) as a tool for creative thinking, a sounding board in the pre-planning of specific sculptures.
This solo exhibition journeys through the studio and aesthetic conventions of the artist – a holistic presentation of his works is intricately and intentionally placed across the gallery space. Composition and material knowledge hold equal prominence to Rozenman in their ability to arouse the subconscious. Perhaps these pieces are timekeepers as they are simultaneously futuristic and articles of period aesthetics. The materiality of glass provides an infinite form, unless tampered with, which is combined with the architectural nuances of aluminium and wood. The arduous nature of glasswork cannot be underestimated, and yet, it does not play the central role in how these pieces are to be perceived.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jehoshua Rozenman (b. 1955, Tel Aviv, Israel) lives and works in Amsterdam and Berlin. Having graduated from Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (1982), Rozenman is a multimedia artist who paints, makes videos, and sculpts. He is described as a "Glass Poet" ever since the artist discovered that this is the ideal medium to make his ideas tangible. Its fragile and breakable character plays beautifully against its ability to last for thousands of years.
His work has been exhibited in amongst others the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam; Provincial Museum of Modern Art Hasselt, Belgium; Museum of Modern Art Groningen; Nationaal Glas Museum, Leerdam; Beelden aan Zee in Scheveningen; the Contemporary Art Center Nieuw Dakota, Amsterdam; and Lustwarande, Tilburg as well as in galleries in Amsterdam, Berlin, New York, Antwerp, and Tel Aviv. Furthermore, his work has been highlighted in publications in Het Parool, Trouw, Fjoezz Magazine, Telegraaf, NRC, and Elseviers Weekblad, to name a few.
